Enthusiasm makes it all worthwhile

We’ve been thinking a lot lately about what a difference attitude makes, and not just yours but of those around you.  In the blog TechCrunch last fall, MG Siegler wrote about the incredible enthusiasm Steve Jobs is famous for in presenting all of Apple’s new products.  He compared that to some of the other very large tech companies where employees are not universally so enamored with their company brands and products, and work for some is work, or about a paycheck.  He closed with a comment we found thought provoking: Read more…

De-cluttering our lives

Here at Just Say Glow, we call our work “exfoliation for your life.” In his article “The Clean Slate Guide to Simplicity,” Jeffrey Tang puts some concrete steps and strategies out there for how you can “try on” a blank slate without literally ditching everything already in your life first! What tradeoffs do you make to reap the rewards in your life?

Interesting article in Sunday’s New York Times (http://nytimes.com) by Prerna Gupta, former consultant and venture capitalist, now entrepreneur, on understanding what is truly rewarding in her life.  She points out the great benefits of a big job at a top rated firm but also the psychic and real costs paid to maintain that lifestyle.  Ultimately Prerna realized the money, prestige, and strong organizational structures were working against rather than for her and she made the difficult decision to launch out on her own.  She and her husband have  created a very popular music app for the iPhone yet their company continues not to be profitable.  Here is an excerpt of how her challenges have shifted, yet how in the face of her current life she knows the rewards are worth the sacrifices: Read more…

The limits of choice

We know many of you read and enjoyed Gretchen Rubin’s memoir, The Happiness Project (for those unfamiliar, it is a recent best seller recounting a year spent in pursuit of happiness, following what Gretchen describes as the “wisdom of the ages, the current scientific studies, and the lessons from popular culture about how to be happy”).  As part of that year, one project she undertook was creating an often-illuminating, generally entertaining blog.  In a recent post, Gretchen takes a look at how important it is to make goals concrete if we really want and expect results from ourselves.  She gives a particular insight we thought worth sharing, especially in light of the recent work we have been doing trying to separate CONTENT from CONTEXT. For better or worse…

You know those parenting moments when you realize what you did was useful but not helpful???  I had one of those with my daughter today.  She prefers her “dedicated” high school baby sitters to having our 20 something housekeeper/babysitter watch her (which is unfair since the housekeeper sitter is only a few weeks into our family and the others have been part of our family for two years or more… but what do you expect from a seven year old?).  So when I told her she was going to stay with T. tonight and she expressed dismay, I offered suggestions to both her and T. on how to make it more fun.  How much more helpful would i have been in that moment to have said to my daughter, “You know, in life most of the time you don’t get to choose everything about how things go.  Things are what they are, and you can make them worse or better with your attitude, thoughts, and actions.” Read more…

Accepting myself, right now, as I am…

Being with the status quo does not come easily to me.  I crave change and I bring a context that if I’m always moving towards something different from where I am, I don’t have to accept or take a stand that where I am is just fine.  Because that would risk my being WRONG.  What if I were being a fool to decide right now is good enough?  Can’t have that!  So in motion I go… Read more…

Hello to the Glow!

We are putting on a great workshop for the women of Santaluz this week and are fired up!  It’s called CAMP MOM:  It’s All About You.  We will spend a thought provoking morning sharing how we make things work for our kids in supporting their “glow” and development, and looking at what we can learn from our commitment to them to deliver for ourselves!

If you are in the neighborhood, drop on by!
