We’ve been thinking a lot lately about what a difference attitude makes, and not just yours but of those around you. In the blog TechCrunch last fall, MG Siegler wrote about the incredible enthusiasm Steve Jobs is famous for in presenting all of Apple’s new products. He compared that to some of the other very large tech companies where employees are not universally so enamored with their company brands and products, and work for some is work, or about a paycheck. He closed with a comment we found thought provoking:
Enthusiasm and passion are so important, no matter what you do. If you don’t feel like you have that towards the company you are with, you should seriously consider leaving. Of course, there is something to be said about a paycheck, especially in tough economic times, but if you have the means and are simply spinning your wheels doing something that you don’t believe in, you’re really not helping anyone, and especially not yourself.
And you’re not helping us, the public, either, because if you’re not enthusiastic about something, we’re certainly not going to be.
Our business is really founded on a similar idea for life: if you are spinning your wheels, and not truly drawing energy and inspiration from what you wake up to and how you spend at least some of your time each day, you are not helping yourself or anyone else. We find we are BETTER wives, mothers, business partners, friends, and coaches when we are deeply engaged in our passions. A week when we have a presentation, things can get quite busy and stressful. Yet if we reflect honestly, we think there is more love in our hugs, more passion in our kisses, and even more pleasure gained from the moments of goofing off, when we are that focused.
And it helps increase our enthusiasm for our lighter work weeks and the occasional truly free day that comes along. We love what we do and we feel so fortunate to have oriented much of our lives to be able to do this work. Yet the choice was not an easy one.
No one finds it easy to walk away from the security or comfort of the known and make wholesale switches in what life is going to be about. It takes a lot of things: trust, knowledge, support, action. But we agree with Sigler, that one important factor in ensuring that the switch leads to the fulfillment you are after is to make sure you are doing something that truly brings forward your passionate enthusiasm!
Let us know what you think about Siegler’s comments. What do you have great enthusiasm for in your life or in the world? Is there an aspect of life where you recognize your attitude is not what it once was or what you would like it to be? What have you been considering taking on but not sure if you have the passion to make it fly?
