In yoga today, my instructor mentioned at least five times that a particular pose should feel “super good” on whatever body part it was we were stretching/extending/rotating at the time. I found myself wondering why “good” wasn’t good enough?
Even in yoga I guess we are not removed fully from our “do more, be more” culture. We need everything to be off the charts! Way better than average or ordinary. But by definition, if everything is “super,” doesn’t that just still mean average? And, in a way, doesn’t that leave us more focused on some kind of rating of what’s happening in our lives or our experience versus simply experiencing it?
I’m one of those over-animated communicators who loves to find words to communicate what I’m thinking and feeling to the rest of the world. But I must say it seems like we limit ourselves to only the superlative portion of the “expression spectrum” sometimes. If I say, “it moved me,” do you get it with any less impact than if I say “it totally moved me”?
Do you find yourself asking and expecting that things you do and touch must rise above some standard you set for yourself? And using language that creates the sense that only big things matter? If not, how do you stay grounded and trust that you and those around you fully grasp the significance of your expressions?
